We all have songs that instantaneously put us in a chipper mood and mandate an immediate dance party. For me those songs tend to all fall in the doo wop category. I could be in the middle of a medical breakthrough resulting in the end of frizzy hair for all, but if the "Mashed Potato" came on the radio, I would have to remove my lab coat and shimmy my behind only to return to my work once the song had finished. It's an involuntary reaction caused by the sweet harmonies and catchy beats of doo wop. If you aren't familiar with this genre of music, you NEED to listen to the playlist below. Trust me, your shoulders are gonna start to sway, your behind will then begin to bounce, and before you know it you will be cutting up a rug. I wish there was a way we could all skype together at the same time and have a virtual blogger dance party. Until then break out your saddle shoes, tease your hair to the highest heights and get ready to boogie.
Hugs,
Amber Blue Bird

thank you for yor comment.

Oh, Amber. I wonder if you were born at the wrong time. That photo is indicative of my time. I was in love with most of your playlist. I might add Rockin Robin. I actually even know the words to most of them. What fun they are to listen to.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but I never heard of any of these! (LOL) Just kidding, folks! I tend to kid! First of all this is a great compilation for young people to hear because almost all of the tracks are the original versions by the original artists. "Mashed Potato Time" is a rerecording and while's it's good it's not the original which really kicks butt. Wanda Jackson's "Money Honey" is a cover of the original by Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters, but it's a fabulous rendition by the First Lady of Rockabilly who sounded like a cross between Brenda Lee and Jerry Lee Lewis.
ReplyDeleteSome of these songs are ones that I remember from childhood because my older brother bought the 45s and I rocked out to them when he wasn't around. They include "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," "Come Go With Me" "Tweedle Dee" (beware of white cover version by Georgia Gibbs), "Lollipop," "Mr. Sandman," and "Blueberry Hill."
As I have mentioned on my blog I was stage manager for an oldies revival concert that included the Coasters, the Chiffons and the Flamingos.
My Pick to Click in this batch is "Da Do Ron Ron." The Crystals dish a heaping helping of tough, in-your-face girl group attitude and the aggressive beat helped usher in go-go style dancing.
Thanks for spreading the word, Blue Bird, that there was indeed music before American Idol!
I too am dancing up a storm right now! Thanks. Happy Friday. xoxo
ReplyDeleteIm so going to listen to them right now! They all sound fantastic. Happy Friday, darling

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh.. I love you even more now.
ReplyDeleteWhy?
Because I love these songs and because I have to start packing.. so now I have a packing playlist!

It's my goal to one day host a party and only play these sorts of tunes. Tried it a few new years ago, but then someone took over and started a Rihanna pandora station. Boo.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean - there are some songs where dancing is just a requirement!
ReplyDeleteChic on the Cheap

love ur playlist...hard not to break out into a random dance move when any one of these is playing!
ReplyDeleteOmg you might very well be my soul sister!! I am the same way with doo-wop! I always have said, since I was a child, that I should have been a teen in the 50's! I used to looove wearing costume-y poodle skirts and my old black and white saddle shoes my mom bought me from Wal-Mart.
ReplyDeleteI found your blog on flickr and have read three of your posts now. I am also a Texan that has migrated north!! I'm in New Jersey for school. My husband and I both served in the military, so I've been moving around quite a bit for the last 9 years, but Texas is where I lived till I was 18 and it will always be my heart.
Nice to meet you, I'm Roni, by the way. :)
