Weak In The Knees: Oh The 80s

Where do I even begin?  From the neon attire to the "I just got electrocuted" teased hair to the keytar playing leather wearing musicians, the 80s were a good time.  Despite all this awesomeness, for me the 80s were spent watching the most bombastic cartoons (Jem anyone?) and swooning over the New Kids On The Block (seriously I had the books, the cassette tapes, and even a pj tee shirt with their pictures on it, crazy). Yep I was just a wee child in those days reading every Babysitters Club book I could get my hands (I thought I would one day start my own busniess watching kids, yeah right) and crafting friendship bracelets for my very best buddies.  I was afraid of E.T., rocked a side pony many times, collected scratch and sniff stickers, and wore my jellys till they had to be thrown away.  While the 80s were cool in my book its only now that I realize how much I missed out on since I was so little then.  I didn't have a clue about Duran Duran, Dirty Dancing, or Mr. Roboto.  Oh but I am making up for it now. So dust off your aqua net, put on your high top reeboks (preferably with some scrunched down socks), throw back some Pop Rocks with coke, and get ready for a fun inducing dance party.  Take me away Patrick Swayze!

I know that playlist is crazy long, but how could I choose just one Madonna or Michael Jackson tune?  Its wasnt possible.  Dont judge me, just listen and be happy.

Hugs,

Amber Blue Bird

  1. I loved everything about this post. Especially the picture of Red Fraggle, she was my favorite!! Oh, and I have a mini Popple as part of my decor in my office, but almost all my coworkers are at least 20 years my senior so no one gets it. *sigh* ;-)

  2. That playlist is AWESOME!

We're throwing a joint birthday party for my husband and brother in 2 weeks and the game plan is to play only 80's music. It's going to be awesome.

  3. You got Bette Davis eyes, Amber Blue Bird! I'm not hep to the jive when it comes to this newfangled music! Is this here what you young 'uns call hippety-hop??? I'm OLD, Amber! I was already 80 in the 80s! Sorry, that was a typo. I was 90!

Where do I begin? I was an NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) motivational seminar trainer in the mid and late 80s and we regularly used the following as "anchor" songs: "Time of My Life" (at the conclusion of the event), "Eye of the Tiger" (to pump people up to walk on fire), "I Want to Dance With Somebody" and "Dancing on the Ceiling" (for morning stretching and exercising), and "Heaven is a Place on Earth" (to add to the euphoria after completion of the firewalk).

My MTV station played the videos for every one of these song on your list. Our station played the extended 8 minute long video of "Venus" by Bananarama and I spent a great deal of time in my edit suite examining the video frame by frame because the three women really do kiss on the mouth several times during the video. Girl-girl action like that was still a novelty back then. These days you can see it in every Disney production. "Flashdance" was the theme of one of my favorite 80s movies and Jennifer Beals' infamous "lobster scene" stands as one of the hottest in cinematic history. Springsteen's video for "Dancing in the Dark" featured a young Courteney (Friends/Cougar Town) Cox as a fan whom the Boss pulls out of the crowd and up on stage with him during his concert performance. Another magic moment in rock history was Madonna's early appearance on American Bandstand. In the interview portion Dick Clark asked her to name her "blonde ambition" and she boldly declared "I wanna rule the world." Our station hosted Poison several times. They came to our studio to tape interviews and we went backstage at their concerts. Good times, Amber Blue Bird! I was there for all of it. Granted I used a walker and had a drool bucket around my neck but dammit, I was THERE for it! Have a wonderful weekend, dear friend!

  16. I, too, am often sad about being a baybay during the 80's. But I do share your NKOTB love. It was my first concert! And on the way back to our car, we walked past the tour bus and their driver gave me Donnie's cloth napkin from dinner. YEAH I KNOW. It probably wasn't his napkin, it was probably something totally disgustin....but I still have it.

    ;)
