Elfland

After a few trying reading sessions, I finally finished the fantasy novel Elfland.  To say I'm torn by the book is an understatement.  The book focuses on a group of Aetherials who live among us, indistinguishable from humans, but who have the ability to enter the "Otherworld" via supernatural gates that are protected by an appointed gatekeeper (did you get all that?).  Its this gatekeeper that gets the plot going as he has visions of demonic forces past the portal thus sealing the pathway and forever immobilizing the Aetherials from entering their homeland.  Naturally I loved the Aetherial sci-fi aspect, but when the writer would turn her attention to the relationships of the families who sought to solve the mystery of the gates, it became very soap operay.   At one point a romance develops that turns into a little pg-13 rated sex scene with the writer referring to the male's penis as a wand (umm, ick much).  I really wanted to like this book more, but it was just eh.  For anyone looking for a light sci fi summer read, I'd recommend bypassing Elfland and checking out The Last Mermaid by Shana Abé. Its got mermaids and romance and then some more mermaids and more romance, and ends with mermaids and romance. So basically its pretty much perfect.

  1. Elfland and The Last Mermaid are over my head, Amber Girly Bird. Tales From the Crypt comic books are more my speed.

To use your words and twist them around a bit YOU are "basically pretty much perfect." The outfit you wore in this set is simple yet... Indescribable Wow!

I wish I could wave my magic wand and turn every blue bird into an Amber Girly Bird!

  7. I've been looking for a new sci-fi/fantasty series to read for a while now, and I'm surprised I haven't come across Elfland. But uhm, yeah, I have no tolerance for soap-opera-y books, so I thanks for warning me against it :) but The Last Mermaid sounds almost perfect! Throw in a couple of dinosaurs in it and it will be :)
