Weak In The Knees: Eilen Jewell

Image Via: Here

How do you describe an artist that is part jazz, part rockabilly, part blues, and part country?  You call it Eilen Jewell and move on.  This Boston based balladeer has been recording since 2006, but I first laid my ears on Jewell when her rendition of "Shakin All Over" was featured on an episode of True Blood (which I only watch for the articles...errr music...errr naked Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd).  After hearing that tune and not being able to get this lady's voice out of my head, I purchased her latest release "Queen of the Minor Key" and never looked back.  This album, along with every other album, is basically a musical cracker jack box.  You never know what you are gonna get, but you're excited to find out.  Its this spontaneity, this genre hopping that propels Jewell to the top of my playlist. Click play below and see what you get (fyi, its probably gonna be music).

Hugs,
Amber

  1. I'm stuck on you like a new tattoo, Amber Girly Bird, (or maybe a wart)! You're my high shelf booze! Your blog is home to me. I'm HOOKED on your Friday tune fest. Clearly, you and I both admire music acts that artfully engage in genre hopping, their albums an amalgam of styles blended together with exciting results. Eilen Jewell is a fine example. I love her rendition of "Shakin' All Over" which is a song from my mid 60s youth and one that I've presented on my blog. It was originally recorded by the English group Johnny Kidd & the Pirates but the version that grabbed me was the cover released by Chad Allan & the Expressions, the Canadian group that soon after became famous in America as The Guess Who (see "American Woman"). "Kalimotxo" is obviously derived from a Jan & Dean instrumental tune called "Quasimoto" that I uploaded on my YouTube channel:

    1. Hey all...its Jason from Eilen's band. Thanks to The Girly Bird for the plugs! A note for Shady-we have never heard that Jan and Dean instrumental before for what it's worth. But the one that inspired Eilen and the guys was in fact the ever-covered "Church Key"...originally performed by The Revels: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fusj7QxEXTg

  6. True Blood ends its episodes with some amazing music choices which ALMOST seems odd to me because I didn't care for the True Blood soundtrack. But you my dear strike again with the awesome music recommendations, you're like a musical super hero, your cape wrapped itself around my lamp and broke it again... geez! Did that joke make sense? Probably not...
