If ever there was a band that best showcased the retro girl group garage style pop sound that is so predominant in indie music nowadays, its La Sera (which means "the evening" in Italian). This band is the brainchild of Vivian Girls alumni Katy "Kickball" Goodman and is something of a a musical cuddle between the romance of She & Him and the brassiness of Best Coast. Goodman's crystal clear vocals are combined with simple melodies and even simpler lyrics to create these dreamy without being sleepy tunes. Its a throwback sound that requires no gimmicks or convoluted verses to achieve, which may sound as if it is easy to create however many bands have tried only to torpedo towards failure. Goodman knows her sound, knows her audience, and knows how to reel them in. She's certainly got a hold of this music lover, hook, line, and sinker.

Que Sera, Sera, Amber Girly Bird, (Whatever Will Be, Will Be), and Kickball's La Sera group will be playing in my brain for a long long time. "Never Come Around" is derivative of the Ronettes' "Be My Baby" and other early 60s Wall-O-Sound singles produced by Phil Spector. "Drive On" and "I Can't Keep You in My Mind" remind me very much of Debbie Harry during Blondie's late 70s/early 80s heyday. One thing's for sure: I love La Sera and I'll be keeping Amber G.B. in my mind all weekend long. Have a safe and happy one, dearie!
