Weak In The Knees: Jill Barber

Image Via: Here

Ah Canada, land of ruby-red horse mounted police officers and birthplace to the number one spot on my list of people I can cheat on my husband with, Ryan Gosling (fyi I'm only half kidding).  This land also happens to be home to Canadian chanteuse Jill Barber, a sixties style crooner who would have fit in swimmingly with the likes of Sinatra or Holiday.  While her nostalgia driven tunes are reminiscent of that "golden age" of music, the classicness (yes that's a real word) of her voice combined with sometimes cheeky and sometimes deep lyrics is a refreshing contrast from the over produced radio friendly tunes of today. Barber is another late night Tumblr find of mine that saw me playing the ever catchy finger snapping diddy "Oh My My" on repeat for about a day and half (true story). The rest of her catalog is equally infectious and best enjoyed late at night preferably with a glass of wine and your sweetheart by your side (the sweetheart part is totally optional).

Hugs,

Amber

  1. I know how it is, Amber Girly Bird, when a certain celeb gets under your skin and you find yourself with a cheatin' heart. For years now I've had the hots for Granny on the Beverly Hillbillies. Jill Barber's retro rocks! Her recordings could easily be mistaken for vintage early 60s girl pop. Some of it harks back to the WWII era when lady singers fronted big bands. There's even a taste of Dixieland jazz in "Leaving You." Jill's voice is quite different but I can still imagine Marilyn Monroe as Sugar Kane in Some Like It Hot crooning these torch songs backed by her all girl band. I'm glad you appreciate as I do the uncluttered arrangements and production found here as opposed to the overproduced goop we hear so often.

Thank you very much, Amber, for another fine batch of tunes to start the weekend. Have a great one, dear friend!
