Michigan native Mayer Hawthorne is the stuff of my hipster dreams. Geek chic glasses? Check. Disheveled slim cut suit? Check. Quirky offbeat attitude with a romantic twist? Double Check. Yes, this "neo-soul" artist could just be the poster boy for some trendy fair trade bird art shop. Instead he is bringing back the sounds of Motown with a modern twist (think the Temptations, but with cussing). Hawthorne has been recording his unique blend of smooth grooves since 2009, but he didn't pop up on my radar until last year with the release of the single "The Walk" wherein he snappily tells his lady love to hit the road using very colorful language. Its a song that will have you singing along with a smirk on your face and may even cause a giggle or two to escape your lips. Its that crack jack sense of humor combined with a buttery voice and shoulder bumping inducing tunes that makes this kid a winner in my book.

Wowie, Amber Girly Bird! This certainly does sound like vintage Chitown soul. "The Walk" is stupendous! Mayer Hawthorne along with his backing vocalists and musicians do a superb job of replicating the smooth, cool, laid-back soul style that came out of Chicago during the mid to late 60s on labels like Vee-Jay, Chess, Checker, Cadet and Brunswick. "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out" is killer. Shifting gears, Mayer and his group do a fine rendition of "Mr Blue Sky," a hit in 1977 for E.L.O., the English band Electric Light Orchestra. Excellent stuff to kick-off the weekend. Thanks, Amber!
