Eat, Pray, Love

Since summer is all about light and airy beach reads, I decided to venture from my normal sci fi novels and picked up Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert to satisfy my inner chick lit demon.  I completed this book a few weeks ago and was having a hard time putting my review into words cause for some reason "eh" just didn't seem sufficient.  This book centers around Gilbert who after a horrendous divorce "sets out to examine three different aspects of her nature, set against the backdrop of three different cultures: pleasure in Italy, devotion in India, and balance in Bali."  That all sounded well and good and even though I couldn't personally relate to the author's divorce, I was able to understand her need to find herself.  So I went along for the ride and gobbled up all the chapters devoted to her time in Italy as I could relate to her want to eat gelato and pasta four times a day.  Then the book turns to India and mediation which had me thinking "okay well I don't get it but its still interesting."  Then we enter Bali zone with medicine men and real estate specs and I was like "yeah you lost me."  Eat, Pray, Love was one of those books that I finished only because I hate to stop a book midway (I feel like it hurts the book's feelings).  So I guess that's the long version of a simple one word review "eh."

  1. I'm feelin' ya, Amber Girly Bird. It was the same for me the first time I read The Cat in the Hat. It wasn't exactly a page turner but I felt the need to finish and gain closure. Where did that sculpture come from? Did you find a new park? Did it just show up in your old park? Did Kevin build it as a prop for the photo shoot? Is it a bear? Is it an exact replica of Oliver? Where is Jimmy Hoffa buried? I hope you have the answer to at least one of my questions, dearie.

    Thank you!

    You look gorgeous here!
Have a marvy day up your way, dear friend Amber!

  2. I didn't understand the character, but somehow I enjoy the movie, perhaps for the places and the culture only.

  3. I've never read the book but I saw the movie. Once she left Italy I wasn't interested anymore. Love the pig sculpture.

  6. I adore this outfit! I need a decent shirt-dress in my life. Yeah I could never get myself to read the book or watch that movie. I do like my chick-lit, but I am more of a Meg Cabbot girl.

  7. Eh is pretty much how I felt about the movie, I didn't read the book. I couldn't help but wonder how a woman goes to a country where she doesn't know a soul and ends up with two dozen best friends in a matter of days (or was it hours) after arriving.

Love the cute little shirt dress, I need more of these!

  8. Loving the outfit, and such a cute (very large) bear. You know I'm not much of a reader but that definitely doesn't sound like my style, ha ha... I did watch the movie once though because there was nothing on...

  12. I can't believe Kevin caught you smoochin that bear/animal/wire/sculpture thing! I have to admit if a film comes out based on a book and I can't even be bothered seeing the film even though I watch the worst films sometimes, then I know I won't like the book! Thanks for reviewing it so I know my decision was right! ;) I can't wait to start reading again, that pile of books on my kitchen table is going to get read I swear, I definitely won't eat my meals around it!

  13. I haven't read the book OR seen the movie, so I can't really contribute to that end of the conversation. But today's pictures make me think I need more shirt dresses in my life. :-)

  14. I read it years ago and loved it. The divorce part dragged on a bit as if to make it sound more dramatic than it was, but I really got into the rest. The movie was terrible.

  15. Eat, Pray, Love is one of the few books I actually have stopped midway through. I just didn't really like the woman who wrote it very much. I was forcing myself through the book and then I stopped and thought "If I met this woman in real life, I would stop hanging out with her. Why should I make myself keep reading her book?!" It was such a relief to just put the book down. I never do that!

  19. Love this look on you, but I adore the fact that you hate to break a book's heart–I feel the same way!

  21. That's EXACTLY how I felt when I read 'She's Come Undone'. It had stellar reviews.. but I just didn't get it. It was alright-- 'eh'-- but I had hyped it up so much. I hate stopping midway so I trucked on through it.. but whatevs. :/

  23. I love the photos! I agree about the book... she lost me too in the last section especially. I tried the second one too, I think it's called Committed...and it was also kind of eh. You know what I did enjoy though? It kind of is a similar genre... Around The World in 80 Dates by Jennifer Cox.

  24. There are some books that can be summed up with a simple eh... and although this post is very articulate, I have also read the book and when you said eh, I completely understood. But, like you, I finished it. I can't help myself.

  25. I have heard that this book is terrible- which is why I have never read it and that she is very self-centred.

  26. I only saw the movie a couple months ago and my exact critique as the credits were rolling was, "eh", as well. I too enjoyed her self searching quest and the food (!) but it really wasn't as deep as I was expecting. I was wanting to be able to relate more, not only as someone who's been through divorce, but as the constant soul searcher I am, and as a woman/human. But it wasn't there for me. Harvest Moon dance was probably my favorite part, but only because the song. I love that fucking song. Again, eh.
But not "eh" to that adooooorable blue outfit. Me say, Ayyyyyeee!

    1. P.s. How bout this shit - I just realized I start school THIS Monday! I about had a panic attack. I mean, I was ready for it soon, but fuck, not Monday soon. If you're available for a certain weekend, definitely still let me know though. I'll just visit for a day or something and make sure my homework gets done. It should be no big deal when we finally set this boat in motion.
